The most popular career subject I see teachers looking/asking for lessons on is interviews. While this area is important, do your students know about the important things that come BEFORE going to an interview?
Without the foundational skills and knowledge that come before job apps and interviews, are we really setting up our students up for success? Don’t skip these 5 things we should be teaching students first:
Why We Work
Do your students understand the reasons why people have jobs? Dive deeper into how everything we eat or own is because of someone working, and how money = paying for basic needs & shelter.
Looking Professional
Students should know about basic hygiene & grooming routines, casual vs formal dress codes, uniforms, doing laundry/dry cleaning…etc. These skills will play an important role not only in the workplace, but for the interview.
Types of Employment
In order to submit a job application or secure an interview, students need to know the differences of part-time jobs, full-time jobs, volunteering, internships, seasonal jobs…etc and what positions they qualify for.
Job Applications/Resumes
Students should know their personal information, what adjectives are relevant to the skills that they can also talk about in an interview, their work history, experience & education that is relevant to the job they are applying for, who to choose for references & letters of recommendation…etc.
Searching For A Job
Students should understand how to use a job search engine and narrow down their search according to their interests and qualifications, what employment agencies are, how to look out for job scams…etc.
